About
The SIR Foundation Summer Medical Internship Program introduces medical students to interventional radiology research and medical device development. The goal of this program is to foster an interest in research by funding a summer research project conducted by a medical student.
Students applying for the program must show strong potential for a career in IR with proven academic success. Selected students will have an opportunity to intern with an interventional radiologist research mentor or corporate research and development mentor for 8 weeks during the summer.
SIR Foundation will provide a $6,000 stipend to help ease the financial burdens throughout their internship experience.

Eligibility
- Applicants must be recommended by one of the following members of their faculty:
- Director of the radiology residency program
- Director of the IR fellowship
- Interventional radiologist on the faculty
- Applicants should be a student in good standing, actively enrolled in an allopathic or osteopathic medical school, and must be available to be on-site at the host location for the entire duration of the internship
- The medical student must be a member in good standing of the Society of Interventional Radiology
- The student must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent U.S. resident status. Permanent residents must submit documentation of this status.
How to apply
Medical students interested in applying for the 2025 Summer Medical Internship Program must submit the following:
- The application document
- A letter of recommendation
The application will be considered incomplete until SIR Foundation receives a letter of recommendation from one of the following members of the applicant's faculty:
- Director of the radiology residency program
- Director of the IR fellowship
- An interventional radiologist on the faculty
Note: If you wish to submit a letter of recommendation from another IR because your faculty does not have a residency or fellowship program, please use the email listed below for an exception.
